Fracas breaks out after Bellator bout

Andreas Spang had an exciting win at Bellator on Friday night, but what will be remembered is how he acted afterwards.

Spang was rocked in the second round by Brian Rogers in the Bellator middleweight tournament semifinal, but he came back to knock Rogers out with a left hook. Rogers fell to the canvas like a tree being cut down. After the fight was stopped, Spang jumped to the top of the cage and flipped two middle fingers to the Cleveland crowd, who was behind the Ohio-based Rogers.

After his arm was raised for the win, Bellator brought Maiquel Falcao in the cage to face off with Spang. Falcao win his tournament semifinal in a decision earlier in the evening. When they faced off, Spang pushed him. Falcao responded with a knee to Spang's body, but clearly pulled a punch and didn't hit Spang before they were separated. Falcao charged back towards Spang, but was stopped by his coaches and Bellator commentator Jimmy Smith. Both men were ushered out of the cage without any further incident.

According to the Detroit News' Matt Bishop, Ohio Athletic Commissioner Bernie Profato immediately "read Spang the riot act" after the bout. This isn't the first time he pushed an opponent while not in a fight. During Thursday's weigh-ins, he pushed Rogers as they faced off.

UPDATE: Bishop reports that Profato has given Spang the option of a $500 fine and a six-month suspension, which would take him out of the middleweight tournament final, or 20 percent of his purse now. If Spang crosses the line again, the six-month suspension will be added on.

Android Central international round-up - April 21, 2012

Android Central

This week marked the start of the official countdown to the Samsung Galaxy S III launch. Press events to the launch event in London on May 3 started rolling out on Monday (we'll be there, of course), and by Friday we had plenty of juicy morsels of leaked information to report.

The Cupertinoesque secrecy surrounding Samsung's next flagship phone (the name of which we're still not entirely sure) finally wavered on Friday, with the leaking of a two and a half-minute video from a Vietnamese tech site, along with a dozen or so photos. But here's where things get interesting -- the phone's final design is being hidden behind a plastic dummy case, so although the software and specs have been laid bare, we still don't know exactly what this thing will look like when it comes to market. We'll have to wait and see what Samsung shows us on May 3, so keep watching in the weeks ahead!

Android Central

It wasn't all Samsung at the international desk this week, though. We also published our review of the HTC One V, the new entry-level device in HTC's 2012 line-up. We found that although some functionality had been scaled back compared to the One X and S, it still made for a solid budget offering, although it'll face tough competition from discounted 2011 flagships in the coming months.

Here's a quick run-down of some of the highlights in international Android news over the past seven days --

Some women's groups see another agenda in attacks on ...

Photo: Matthew Bowden

By Judith Graham

Opponents of the Obama administration?s contraceptive coverage mandate?? including likely GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney?? invoke ?religious freedom.?

But women?s groups and family planning organizations are convinced that the real objective is to limit access to birth control.

?There is a lot of deliberate obfuscation going on with the purpose of pretending that this debate is not really about birth control, when it most definitely is,? said Susan Cohen, director of government affairs for the Guttmacher Institute, a family planning research and policy institute.

Cohen points to efforts in Congress over the past year to defund Planned Parenthood and eliminate funding for Title X family planning services for low-income women as further evidence of social conservatives? increasingly public antagonism to birth control.

?I?ve been doing this for over three decades and I don?t remember such overt attacks on contraception in all that time,? she said.

No other health care service mandated under state or federal law has provoked a similarly furious response, and that?s not accidental, said Marcia Greenberger, co-president of the National Women?s Law Center.

?Much of the opposition being voiced is, in fact, being driven by opposition to contraception,? she said.

?Much of the opposition being voiced is, in fact, being driven by opposition to contraception.?

The administration?s policy?? which was crafted to fulfill certain provisions of the health overhaul law ? requires all insurance plans to provide no-cost birth control to women members.

While churches are excluded from the mandate, religious hospitals, colleges and social service agencies are not.? Attempts to strike a compromise have so far proved unsuccessful.

Battles over contraception are also being fought in the states. Five states (Arizona, Georgia, New Hampshire, New Jersey and New York) are considering bills that would give religious employers, broadly defined, greater freedom to opt out of contraceptive coverage mandates.?? Similar ?refusal? legislation is being advanced in Idaho and Oklahoma, although neither state has a mandate.

Catholic bishops make no bones about their church?s condemnation of birth control, but other organizations that oppose the Obama administration?s contraceptive policy haven?t embraced that position.

Particularly noteworthy is the stance of groups that have led the nation?s decades-long fight against abortion. Publicly, these groups say they are against the coverage mandate because it violates religious freedoms and claim that they don?t take a stand on contraception.

But that doesn?t tell the whole story. ?Without much fanfare, pro-life organizations often link some kinds of birth control with abortion, the issue that most inflames social conservatives, and discourage the use of some types of contraception.

In a Feb. 10?statement, the Family Research Council decried the contraceptive mandate for being ?fundamentally anti-religious, anti-conscience and anti-life.?

Asked to elaborate, Jeanne Monahan, director of the group?s Center for Human Dignity, said ?we are 100 percent pro-life from the moment of fertilization or conception and we are opposed to any contraceptive that would have an abortion-inducing mode of action.?

In the view of the Family Research Council, this includes certain intrauterine devices and emergency contraception products known as Plan B and Ella.

In late February,?Monahan testified?against ?drugs and devices that destroy, rather than prevent life? before the House of Representatives? Judiciary Committee ? a reference to products that keep a fertilized embryo from implanting in or being retained by a woman?s uterus.

?If there is a method of contraception that may also be an abortifacient, we encourage women not to use it.?

Although the Family Research Council hasn?t specifically said this applies to the birth control pill, other anti-contraception activists argue that the pills might occasionally interfere with implantation by altering the lining of the uterus.

While this effect hasn?t been proved and is questioned by many scientists, it is mentioned as a possibility on the label of products such as Yaz, a popular version of the pill.

The National Right to Life Committee and other pro-life organizations do not accept the notion that pregnancy begins when a fertilized egg successfully implants in a woman?s uterus ? the definition advanced by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and other medical authorities.

Instead, they believe life begins at the moment of conception, an idea being advanced through so-called ?personhood? legislation being promoted across the country.

?No one is advocating that birth control be eliminated or made more difficult to get,? said Carol Tobias, president of the committee. ?But, she acknowledged that ?if there is a method of contraception that may also be an abortifacient, we encourage women not to use it.?

Her group worries that if the contraceptive coverage mandate is enacted and President Barack Obama wins the election in November, ?he?s going to include abortion in the mandate,? Tobias said.

Focus on the Family said in a statement from Carrie Gordon Earll, senior director of issues analysis, that it ?views the role of contraception as one to be determined in marriage between a husband and wife in accordance to their faith.?

The organization gives more details on its?website, where it affirms its conviction that ?life begins with fertilization (the union of sperm and egg).?

While agents that prevent fertilization from occurring are acceptable, those that act after fertilization are not, it states. Pills that include progesterone only and Norplant, a progesterone-releasing implant placed under the skin, fall in this suspect category and should be avoided, but those including both progesterone and estrogen?? the most common variety?? appear to be acceptable, it suggests.

?Concerned Women for America takes no official position on birth control,? communications coordinator Alison Howard said in an e-mail. But in a?statement about the contraceptive mandate?on its website, the group says, ?Requiring employers affiliated with the Christian faith, like Concerned Women for America, to include free abortion-inducing drugs in their health insurance plans is contrary to both Christian doctrine and constitutional guarantees of religious freedom.?

How the public understands the forces at play in the ongoing debate over the contraceptive coverage mandate may well determine its political resolution and resulting public policy.

An overwhelming majority of Americans strongly support access to birth control and appear poised to reject any attempt to limit it, according to multiple polls.

For the moment, it appears that reproductive health advocates have gained an advantage: 62 percent of people responding to a recent?Bloomberg National Poll?said they believe the controversy is about women?s health and access to contraception while 33 percent said it was about ?religious liberty.?

The nation shouldn?t even be having this discussion, according to 77 percent of the poll?s respondents, who said that ?birth control should not be part of the national political debate.?

'American Horror Story' Season Two Is In 'A Different World'

Creator Ryan Murphy reveals the new season will take place at an East Coast mental institution.

New place, new time, new characters. That's what fans already know about the second season of "American Horror Story," but now creator Ryan Murphy is dishing even more details.

Speaking at a TV Academy panel Wednesday (April 19), Murphy confirmed that the second season in the series will, in fact, take place at a mental institution on the East Coast, as had been rumored. That institution will be run by season-one fan favorite Jessica Lange, who will return as a spankin'-new character. According to Murphy, that locale was teased by Sarah Paulson's medium character in the first season.

"Something that Sarah Paulson's character, Billie Dean, says to Jessica and Taisa as she's sage-ing the house [during the 'Birth' episode] and talking about places where evil collects: We talk about institutions and prisons and things like that," Murphy said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "That was the clue."

Paulson is also set to return to the show, playing someone new, as well as Zachary Quinto, Evan Peters and Lily Rabe.

While season one was set in the present, Murphy hinted that season two will take place in another time. "It's a completely different world and has nothing to do with season one; there's not a mention of season one," he noted at the event, where he was joined by past castmates Connie Britton, Dylan McDermott, Alexandra Breckenridge and Denis O'Hare, most of whom met tragic fates in season one. But he added that some of those actors may also return in some form.

In addition to some old faces, Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine has been added to the cast, playing one-half of "The Lovers." French actress Lizzie Brochere has also joined the cast, potentially playing a nemesis to Lange's character. The new season will kick off later this year on FX.

Xperia P and U pegged for early May launch in the UK

Xperia P

Hot on the heels of the Xperia S come Sony's mid-range and entry-level offerings, the Xperia P and Xperia U. We got to see both devices at the announcement event at Mobile World Congress a couple of months back, and if you're interested in picking either up, you should only have another 2-3 weeks left to wait.

UK retailer Clove Technology now lists both upcoming Xperia phones for pre-order, with an expected release date during the week commencing May 7. The Xperia P is available in black and silver, and will set you back £330 off-contract, the Xperia U comes in black and white, and sells for £204.

Pre-order pricing and release dates are always subject to change, but Clove has a proven track record when it comes to this sort of thing. And given the closeness of the purported release dates, we're inclined to believe them in this instance.

For more on the Xperia P and Xperia U, check out our hands-on coverage from MWC.
