NYer pleads guilty to stalking actress Cotillard

NEW YORK (AP) ? A New York City woman has pleaded guilty to stalking "The Dark Knight Rises" actress Marion Cotillard (koh-tee-YAR').

Teresa Yuan pleaded guilty Friday in Brooklyn federal court. Prosecutors say she sent 504 emails and 120 webcam videos of herself to a Cotillard fan website over four days in 2011.

In some of the videos shown in court, Yuan appears to be topless, hisses like a cat and discusses playing Russian roulette. Her lawyer says he agrees the videos could seem threatening.

The Daily News reports (http://nydn.us/TOhkYD ) the 32-year-old Queens resident told a judge that she's undergoing psychiatric treatment for bipolar disorder.

The charge carries a sentence of up to 16 months in prison, but her lawyer says prosecutors have indicated they wouldn't object to probation and psychological treatment.

Maggie Gyllenhaal High School Drama 'Won't Back Down' Has ...

Writer-director Daniel Barnz's "Won't Back Down" is certainly not the first dramatization of the inner workings of a high school to breed controversy, but it arrives at an especially contentious moment. With debate raging for years and a high-profile teacher strike in Chicago recently in the news, ?Won?t Back Down? arrives at a time ripe for provocation.

The film?s New York premiere at the Ziegfeld Theater on Sunday, Sept. 23, attracted a protest by a group of nearly 50 parents and teachers. Partly funded by Walden Media, the same company that provided financing for David Guggenheim?s 2010 education documentary "Waiting for 'Superman,'" ?Won?t Back Down? has been criticized for what some feel is a sentimental and reductive portrayal of the complicated issues pertinent to underperforming public schools in inner-city areas and the disadvantages faced by students from low-income families.

Over the past several years, documentaries that have tackled education reform and presented a pro-charter stance, including "The Cartel," "The Lottery" and "'Superman,'" have been targeted by teachers' unions and parents for what they saw as the slander of teachers' unions. "Won't Back Down" now finds itself embroiled in a similar controversy prior to its official theatrical release Friday, Sept. 28 through Fox.

"Won't Back Down" stars Maggie Gyllenhaal as Jamie Fitzpatrick, a single mother living on a salary of $23,000 in Pittsburgh. The discovery that her dyslexic daughter doesn't receive special attention from her public-school teacher compels Fitzpatrick to take action. She rallies support from other dissatisfied parents and teachers to invoke a "Parent Trigger," a new law that permits the parents of children at low-performing schools to pressure the school's administration to make changes if they collect signatures from 51% of the school?s parents. Ultimately, such changes might include privatizing a public school or replacing uninspired teachers without the consent of the union. Although the film doesn't explicitly mention the Parent Trigger Law by name, it is undoubtedly based on the legislation.

Barnz's screenplay has been accused of pandering to viewers' emotions and resorting to Hollywood tropes and quick, improbable solutions rather than capturing the multifaceted nature of the issues. But Barnz and the film's producers remain committed to the film and its message, encouraging conversation about the key conflicts. Viola Davis, who co-stars in the film as a teacher and Fitzpatrick's main cohort, told ?The TODAY Show,? "I welcome protests. I welcome discourse; I think discourse is a good thing. I think it spearheads change... And you know what, in this movie the teacher at the end of the day is the hero. They save the day. And it's a system that's broken, that needs to be fixed."

The film's screenplay has generated criticism for being didactic and clich?-riddled, but it?s the movie?s so-called vilification of teacher's unions that provoked the red-carpet demonstration Sunday. "Won't Back Down" is not the first film to elicit strong opposition from teachers' groups. Bob Bowdon's 2009 documentary about New Jersey public schools, ?The Cartel,? also received negative reactions from many pro-union individuals. One of the key issues emphasized in the film was the inability to fire tenured teachers, even if their teaching abilities are mediocre and they are detrimental to students' education. Similarly, in reference to "Waiting for 'Superman,'" a writer for the New Jersey Education Association emphasized, "Teacher unions are portrayed as ?bad? and teachers as ?good.? (Guggenheim fails to understand that the teachers are the union, they are the members. Teachers elect the union leaders. Teachers approve the negotiated contract.)."

Other films to be criticized for oversimplification of the issues include the 2007 drama "Freedom Writers" and the 1995 Michelle Pfeiffer film "Dangerous Minds," both of which focus on dedicated, curriculum-straying (white) teachers at inner-city schools ? as if they were the only teachers to show such dedication or to employ innovative methods. Of course, Hollywood studios backed both these films and "Won't Back Down," and while the directors? and writers? attempts to induce conversation about the American education system were not inherently malicious, they were undoubtedly to some extent restricted by the demands of producing mainstream, profit-generating feature films ? not to mention having a mere two hours to drive their message home.

Davis, Gyllenhaal and co-star Rosie Perez recently sat for a post-screening Q&A?and defended the movie?s right to spark debate, if not every element of the storyline. In response to questions about whether the film is anti-union, Barnz told the L.A. Times, "That is not the point of the movie. The movie is about how parents come together with teachers to transform a school for the sake of their kids."

He, and the women, also suggested that protesters see the film before forming a decisive stance ? the best to educate themselves.

'Unthinkable and devastating': Romney slams Obama on defense cuts

(Alex Wong/Getty Images)SPRINGFIELD, Va.?For the third straight day, Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama campaigned in the same state, with Romney arguing before an audience of military veterans that potential cuts to the defense budget are "unthinkable and devastating."

Speaking in the battleground state at an American Legion post outside Washington, D.C., Romney blamed Obama for planned defense cuts agreed to under a 2011 vote to raise the debt ceiling, known as sequestration, calling it a "kind of a gun-to-your-head opportunity" that will kill jobs in Virginia.

"They would make devastating cuts to our military. It's a strange proposal in the first place, even stranger that it's being put in place," Romney said. "The impact will be immediate, and significant right here in Virginia: 136,000 jobs will be lost in Virginia as a result of this move."

The White House has pointed out that Rep. Paul Ryan, Romney's running mate, and other Republican congressional leaders supported sequestration when it was proposed. Romney has previously said it was a "mistake" for Republicans in Congress to back the deal.

But speaking in Virginia, Romney put the blame squarely on Obama?arguing the president is cutting the military at a time of turmoil around the world.

"It is still a troubled and dangerous world. And the idea of cutting our military commitment by a trillion dollars over this decade is unthinkable and devastating," Romney declared. "And when I become president of the United States, we will stop it. I will not cut our commitment to the military."

Romney spoke at approximately the same time Obama held his own campaign event in Virginia Beach. A recent Fox News poll found Obama leading Romney by 7 points among likely Virginia voters, 50 to 43 percent.

Maingear announces Alpha 24 Super Stock AIO 1080p touchscreen and NVIDIA graphics

Maingear is relatively new to the all-in-one space, having released its Solo 21 just this March. Now it's introducing the Alpha 24 Super Stock, an AIO with a 24-inch, 1080p touchscreen and some solid specs under the hood. Processor choices include a Core i3-3240 chip clocked at 3.4GHz and a Core i7 option (both Ivy Bride, of course), and the AIO is configurable with up to 16GB of SO-DIMM memory. For storage, you're looking at up to a 3TB hard drive and up to a 256GB SSD. Being a Maingear machine, the Super Stock is all about the graphics: an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 GPU comes standard, but that can be switched out for a GeForce GTX 680 chip. There are also two 8-pin PCI-E power connectors on board for good measure.

Also in line with the company's DIY mentality, the machine meets Intel's thin-mini ITX standard for assuring that next-gen components can be swapped in. Rounding out the feature list are an optional CableCARD tuner, an optical drive, HDMI, three USB 2.0 ports and a SD card reader. The Alpha 24 Super Stock will go for $1,349 and up starting today -- check out the full press info below the break.

Effectiveness of glucose-lowering drugs is the focus of the multi-year research project

WASHINGTON - John Lachin, professor of biostatistics, epidemiology and statistics at the George Washington University, has been awarded a five-year, $134 million grant from the National Institute of Health's National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to conduct a clinical trial examining the long-term effectiveness of several glucose-lowering medications for treatment of people with type 2 diabetes. The grant sets a record as the largest sum award GW has ever received.

Dr. Lachin, interim director of GW's Biostatistics Center in Rockville, Md., is principal investigator for the grant along with David M. Nathan, M.D., director of the Diabetes Center at the Massachusetts General Hospital and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, both in Boston. The pair, working jointly with investigators at GW and Massachusetts General Hospital, recruited a network of more than 40 clinical centers nationwide to participate in the study.

"This funding is tremendously important to healthcare as it could result in more effective treatment of diabetes," said Leo Chalupa, vice president of research at GW. "The award of this grant signifies that the Biostatistics Center is a premier facility of its type and that Dr. Lachin and the project team deserve tremendous credit for putting together this successful investigator-initiated grant application. An award of this magnitude will increase the future ranking of GW among the country's research universities and bring us closer to the goal set by President Knapp of becoming a top tier research institution."

Titled Glycemia Reduction Approaches in Diabetes: A Comparative Effectiveness (GRADE) Study (grant # 1 U01 DK-098246), the clinical trial will directly compare the most commonly used medications to treat type 2 diabetes.

"Type 2 diabetes is an epidemic that threatens to become the century's major public health problem and poses enormous human and economic challenges in the U.S. and worldwide," said Dr. Nathan.

Dr. Nathan is the senior medical and scientific investigator for the project and chairs the GRADE Research Group. The director of the Coordinating Center, Dr. Lachin, is the senior biostatistician for the project and is responsible for the coordination of all study research activities. Together they will provide the scientific leadership for the project and oversee all study activities.

The study will address the challenges of type 2 diabetes in a randomized, clinical trial of 6,000 patients with recent onset of type 2 diabetes. The GRADE study will compare the effects of four glucose-lowering medications - the sulfonylurea glimepiride, DPP-4 inhibitor sitagliptin GLP-1 agonist liraglutide and basal insulin glargine, added to metformin over about four years and track their success in combating the disease. Each of the drugs will be used in combination with metformin, the widely accepted first line medication for treatment of type 2 diabetes.

"For people with type 2 diabetes, this is a compelling need because numerous competing treatments are available," said Dr. Lachin. "While each agent was found to safely and effectively reduce blood glucose for relatively short periods such as six months to a year, type 2 diabetes will usually require continued treatment over a lifetime. GRADE'S primary objective is a direct comparison of the commonly used drugs over a more realistic period of time with regard to glucose-lowering, side-effects, tolerability, other effects and costs."

Glucose management is important in diabetes patients because sustained elevated levels of blood glucose can lead to extensive damage to the circulatory system which then can lead to a host of diabetic complications. Damage to the nerves can lead to amputations of the extremities, particularly feet; damage to the kidneys can lead to end stage renal disease requiring dialysis or transplantation; and damage to the eyes can lead to impaired vision or blindness.

"The goal of therapy should be to maintain a blood glucose level as close to the non-diabetes range as possible to prevent or slow the progression of these complications," said Dr. Lachin. "The principal study objective is to determine which of these therapies most effectively and safely reaches and maintains such near normal levels of blood glucose."

More than 40 participating clinical centers each plan to recruit at least 150 eligible patients who have consented to be randomly assigned to one of the four therapies under study. Funds from the grant to GW will be dispersed to these centers to support their activities in the GRADE study.

GW's Biostatistics Center will coordinate all research and operational activities at all sites for the study.

The initial steps of the project are to begin Oct. 1. The present grant supports the first five years of the project, with the opportunity for renewal for an additional three years. The total project duration is scheduled to be eight years.

Romney, Obama focus on US posture abroad

(AP) ? President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney are sparring over how best to address U.S. challenges abroad in nearly back-to-back addresses at the Clinton Global Initiative's annual meeting.

Following deadly anti-American protests in Muslim countries over the past two weeks, Romney was to outline plans Tuesday to rework the U.S. foreign aid system, tying development money to requirements that countries allow U.S. investment and remove trade barriers. Obama also was to address top foreign leaders, CEOs and nongovernmental organizations at the gathering spearheaded by former President Bill Clinton.

The event puts the two presidential contenders in front of the same audience on the day Obama also was delivering a major address to the United Nations General Assembly. Both men were drawing contrasts in a presidential contest in which the state of the U.S. economy has been paramount, but which shifted focus this month to foreign policy after attacks in Libya killed four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador there.

In interviews and at campaign events Monday, Romney assailed Obama's leadership abroad, leading a chorus of Republicans in criticizing the president for what they said was minimizing the death of the Ambassador Chris Stevens. Obama, in an interview with CBS' "60 Minutes," said recent violence in the Mideast was due to "bumps in the road" on the way to democracy. Romney on Monday also suggested Obama was leaving American foreign policy at the mercy of events instead of working to shape global politics in America's interest.

At the United Nations, Obama planned a sweeping defense of his policy of engagement overseas. The president planned to "send a clear message that the United States will never retreat from the world, will bring justice to those who harm Americans and will stand strongly for our democratic values abroad," National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said in an email.

Romney's focus on foreign aid was likely to draw attention to the situation in Egypt, a U.S. ally and the recipient of billions of dollars in American assistance each year. That aid has come under new scrutiny in the wake of protests that saw Egyptians scaling the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo. Romney has said he would put stricter conditions on U.S. aid to Egypt's newly installed government, now headed by an Islamist president. The Obama administration reinstated military aid to Egypt earlier this year despite concerns about abuse as the country transitions to democratic rule.

Romney's campaign said Monday that the current system of foreign aid "reflects an outdated way of thinking about the world."

Both Romney and Obama will appear on a stage at the gathering led by Clinton, who just a few weeks earlier was offering a forceful defense of Obama's economic record and plans for the future at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C.

"I think the president's plan is better than the Romney plan, because the Romney plan fails the first test of fiscal responsibility: The numbers don't add up," Clinton said in that speech, one of several jabs at the Republican nominee.

During the last presidential election, both Obama and 2008 Republican nominee John McCain spoke at Clinton's annual meeting. That year, the former president had warm words for both men. He praised McCain's stance on global warming and complimented Obama's approach to a meeting the two had held earlier in the month at Clinton's Harlem office.

After his speech to the Clinton meeting, Romney planned to discuss education policy at a forum sponsored by NBC News. He also planned to join running mate Paul Ryan at a campaign rally in Ohio.

Navy vessel to be named after Neil Armstrong

A U.S. Navy research vessel being built at a shipyard in Anacortes, Wash., will be named after Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon.

Armstrong passed away Aug. 25. His widow, Carol, will serve as the sponsor for the ship, which isn't scheduled to be completed until late 2014.

The Auxiliary General Oceanographic Research ship, referred to as AGOR 27, will house acoustic equipment capable of mapping the deepest parts of the ocean. It also has onboard laboratories capable of a variety of oceanographic research.

Since Armstrong's name will be assigned to the first ship of the AGOR design, the entire class of ships will be known as the Armstrong class of research vessels.

The ship is under construction at Dakota Creek Industries Inc. in Anacortes. The ship's construction is being funded by the Office of Naval Research; after delivery, it will be operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts.

AGOR 27 will be 238 feet in length, have a beam length of 50 feet, and operate at more than 12 knots.

Before joining the astronaut program, Armstrong was a U.S. Navy aviator.

Romney suggests Obama downplaying Mideast crises

PUEBLO, Colo. (AP) ? Republican White House candidate Mitt Romney suggested Monday that President Barack Obama is downplaying crises unfolding across the Middle East by describing turmoil in the region as "bumps in the road."

"I can't imagine saying something like the assassination of ambassadors is a bump in the road," Romney said in an interview with ABC News. White House spokesman Jay Carney responded that any assertion that Obama is minimizing the killing of a U.S. ambassador and other Americans serving overseas "is both desperate and offensive."

Romney's campaign is looking to push the debate away from the candidate's recent stumbles and reverse the leads Obama has opened in polls of swing state voters. Romney senior adviser Ed Gillespie told reporters Monday that the candidate would be drawing sharper contrasts with Obama and responding to the news of the day when warranted.

And that's just what Romney did by quickly arranging interviews with the television network reporters traveling with him in Colorado.

Romney reacted to an interview broadcast Sunday on CBS "60 Minutes" in which Obama was asked whether recent events in the Mideast have given him pause about supporting the governments that came to power after the Arab spring. Obama said he believed it was right to align with forces of democracy and universal rights.

"But I was pretty certain and continue to be pretty certain that there are going to be bumps in the road because, you know, in a lot of these places the one organizing principle has been Islam," Obama said. "The one part of society that hasn't been controlled completely by the government. There are strains of extremism and anti-Americanism and anti-Western sentiments. And you know can be tapped into by demagogues. There will probably be some times where we bump up against some of these countries and have strong disagreements. But I do think that over the long term we are more likely to get a Middle East and North Africa that is more peaceful, more prosperous and more aligned with our interests."

In the interviews and at a rally shortly afterward, Romney said he views events in the Middle East differently.

"He said the developments in the Middle East are bumps in the road," Romney said to a chorus of boos from supporters gathered to greet his plane on the tarmac in Pueblo, Colo. "Yeah, that was my reaction. Um, bumps in the road? We had an ambassador assassinated, we had a Muslim Brotherhood member elected to the presidency of Egypt, 20,000 people have been killed in Syria, we have tumult in Pakistan, and, of course, Iran is that much closer to having the capacity to build a nuclear weapon.

"These are not bumps in the road, these are human lives. These are developments that we don't want to see," Romney said.

Carney, speaking from the White House shortly before the president left for a taped interview with "The View" and meetings at the United Nations, said Obama was not minimizing the historic transformation taking place overseas or the challenges they have created.

"There is a certain rather desperate attempt to grasp at words and phrases here to find political advantage. And in this case that's profoundly offensive," Carney said.

The candidates also sparred in dueling new television commercials aimed at winning working-class voters by pitting Romney's wealth against the loss of American jobs to China under Obama.

Obama's campaign began running its first spot using Romney's comments that 47 percent of voters pay no income tax, and believe they are victims and entitled to government assistance. The 30-second ad airing in Ohio also highlights that Romney paid 14.1 percent in federal taxes last year on $13.7 million in income, and refuses to release his returns before 2010.

"Maybe instead of attacking others on taxes, he should come clean on his," the ad says.

Romney is trying to shift the debate off his personal wealth and private comments to donors and to worker resentment over jobs moving to China. His new ad released Monday is his latest salvo in a string of criticism against Obama's handling of the rising Asian power.

The commercial showed a photo of a shuttered factory and says fewer Americans are working as China steals the country's ideas and technology. "Obama had years to stand up to China. We can't afford four more," the spot concludes.

Property Taxes to Increase in Fort Wayne if Mayor's Budget Gets Council's OK

September 20, 2012 Updated Sep 20, 2012 at 5:18 PM EDT

Fort Wayne, Ind. (Indiana?s NewsCenter) - If Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry's budget proposal for the coming year is given the green light, people living within the city limits will see their property taxes go up.

Mayor Henry unveiled his proposed $139.8 million spending plan Thursday afternoon.

The mayor says property tax caps have affected their bottom line, so they are using every resource the state has available to them to help make ends meet including raising property taxes.

Mayor Henry says, ?The state allows us to adjust our budget a little bit, everybody all cities, in order to accommodate for changes in the economy.?

According to a spokesman for the Henry Administration, a home with an access valuation of $100,000 will see their property taxes increase two dollars a month.

Taiwan ship nears disputed isles: Japan coastguard

A protest ship from Taiwan briefly joined around a dozen state-owned Chinese vessels in waters near Japan-administered islands on Friday, officials said, as a territorial row rumbled on.

The Taiwanese-flagged ship was spotted late morning 44 kilometres (28 miles) off Uotsurijima, the largest island in a group known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, the Japanese coastguard said.

Japan controls the islands in the East China Sea, although China and Taiwan also claim ownership.

It was the first time since early July that a protest ship from Taiwan had been seen in waters near the island group.

In Taipei, Taiwan's coastguard said in a statement that the vessel, the fishing boat "Ta Han 711", left Keelung port in north Taiwan late Thursday for the islands and headed back to Taiwan before noon.

The boat, escorted by a Taiwan coastguard vessel during the whole trip, was spotted by three Japanese boats although there was no confrontation between the two sides, the statement said.

"The coastguard will protect our people's voluntary activities to defend the Diaoyu islands," it said.

The Taiwanese ship was adorned with banners reading "Protect Diaoyu" and "Get back Diaoyu" in Chinese, the Japanese coastguard said.

Japan's coastguard warned the ship "by speakers and wireless communications not to enter our territorial waters", a spokesman for the coastguard's Okinawa branch said by telephone.

Under international law, territorial waters extend up to 12 nautical miles from a shoreline.

A total of 13 vessels from China's maritime and fisheries authorities were spotted in waters off the disputed islands on Friday.

Four of them moved into the so-called contiguous zone, a band a further 12 nautical miles from territorial waters, off the island of Taishojima, in early afternoon and remained there as of 0600 GMT, the coastguard said.

State-owned Chinese ships have gone in and out of the contiguous zone -- briefly entering territorial waters on Tuesday -- since the row flared up again when Japan nationalised three of the islands on September 11.

Violent anti-Japan demonstrations spread through major cities in China for eight days but practically vanished on Wednesday, reportedly under orders from Chinese authorities.

On July 4, a boat carrying activists and four patrol boats from Taiwan entered territorial waters around the islands.

Markets steady on Spain bailout hopes

LONDON (AP) ? Financial markets steadied Friday on hopes that Spain was preparing to tap a new European aid program, a day after uncertainty about the fragile global economy dented investor sentiment.

Over recent weeks, markets have been buoyed by new measures to deal with Europe's debt crisis and hopes that central banks would offer new economic stimulus. Now that major central banks have provided the stimulus, investors are focused on the deteriorating global economy. Figures this week have mostly pointed to lower growth.

On Thursday, further signs emerged of worsening conditions in Europe, Japan and China, leading to a retreat for stocks, as well as the euro and oil prices.

Though those concerns remain, investor optimism was shored up Friday by hopes that Spain was negotiating with its partners in the eurozone on a new economic reform program. Experts see the reforms as the groundwork for Madrid to request financial aid from Europe's bailout fund and central bank.

The ECB recently announced a bond-buying program meant to bring down the borrowing rates of countries that ask for financial aid. The plan has eased market tensions in Spain, but mainly on the assumption that Madrid will request the aid ? something it has so far balked at doing.

"Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has attempted to delay making the decision for weeks now, however it appears the recent pressure from other European leaders has forced him into negotiations," said Craig Erlam, market analyst at Alpari.

In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was down 0.2 percent at 5,843 while Germany's DAX rose an equivalent rate to 7,403. The CAC-40 in France was flat at 3,509 but Madrid's main IBEX index rose 0.5 percent to 8,059.

Wall Street was poised for modest gains at the open, with both Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures up 0.2 percent.

The euro has also recovered its poise in light of the Spanish hopes, trading 0.3 percent higher at $1.3011. Oil prices, which have also been under selling pressure in recent days, also recouped some losses, with the benchmark New York rate up 65 cents to $93.07 a barrel.

Earlier in Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index, gained 0.2 percent to 9,110.0 while China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index added 0.1 percent to 2,026.69. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.7 percent to 20,734.94.

Paul Ryan Booed At AARP (VIDEO)

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) was booed by the audience while pledging to repeal Obamacare at AARP's annual conference Friday in New Orleans.

"The first step to a stronger Medicare is to repeal Obamacare, because it represents the worst of both worlds: It weakens Medicare for today's seniors and puts it at risk for the next generation," said Ryan, drawing boos from the audience.

Speaking about the cut in the rate of growth for future Medicare spending, Ryan said, "The money wasn't walled off to stay in Medicare. Instead, the law turned Medicare into a piggy bank for Obamacare." That earned louder boos.

"You don't have to take my word for it, you don't have to take my word for it," Ryan pleaded.

Other points at the speech were met with applause, and Ryan was received at the start of his remarks with a mixture of applause and boos.

One remark that did draw applause was his criticism of the health care law's "unelected bureaucrats," an apparent reference to the Independent Payment Advisory Board, a cost-control board with limited power that cannot specifically "ration" coverage by law.

Ryan and Romney both support a plan to transform Medicare into a quasi-voucher system, offering private plans alongside traditional Medicare.

Romney was booed at the NAACP conference in June when pledging to repeal Obamacare, although Romney appeared more rattled and strayed from his prepared remarks more than Ryan did on Friday.

While attacking President Barack Obama on social security, Ryan also was met with a mixture of boos and applause. "Time and again, this president has ducked the tough issues. He's put his own job security over your retirement security," he said. "Of course, he said he'd be willing to work with Republicans, but he has not moved an inch closer to common ground." The audience booed. "When it comes to bipartisanship, it's easy to talk the talk, but there is only one man running for president this year who has actually walked the walk. And that man is Mitt Romney."

Palestinians not worried by Israel-Iran war

(AP) ? While neighboring Israel nervously braces for the possibility of war with arch-enemy Iran, Palestinians are greeting the crisis with a yawn.

Opinions about the international showdown over Iran's burgeoning nuclear program are mixed, but Palestinians largely don't see themselves a party to the conflict and don't expect to be drawn into any violence ? even though two decades ago Iraqi missiles toward Israel sent them scurrying for cover too.

"We haven't discussed war scenarios simply because we don't expect any war," said Azzam Al-Ahmed, an aide to President Mahmoud Abbas, head of the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. "The U.S. is not willing to attack Iran and Israel won't dare attack a strong country like Iran."

    That remains to be seen.

Israel believes that Iran is developing a nuclear bomb, and has repeatedly threatened to attack Iran's nuclear facilities if it thinks that is the only way to prevent the Iranians from building a weapon. Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has expressed skepticism over international efforts to halt the Iranians through diplomacy and economic sanctions.

Israel considers a nuclear-armed Iran to be a threat to its very existence, citing calls by Iranian leaders for Israel's destruction, Iran's sophisticated missile arsenal and Iranian support for hostile militant groups on Israel's northern and southern borders. Iran, for its part, claims its nuclear program is for civilian purposes only.

Iranian commanders have said that an Israeli airstrike would draw an Iranian missile counterattack.

Experts believe such a scenario could involve either Iran firing its long-range Shihab missiles at Israeli population centers or acting via local proxies of Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in Gaza or even groups in Syria. Military intelligence estimates that Israel's enemies now have some 200,000 rockets and missiles aimed at it.

As part of its preparations, Israel has deployed mobile rocket-defense systems and beefed up its civil-defense infrastructure, with large public bomb shelters, public safety drills and handing out gas masks to its citizens. The possibility of war dominates water-cooler conversations, radio programs and evening newscast.

Just a few miles away in the West Bank, the mood is far different. Palestinian officials have not taken any steps to protect the public, due to a combination of denial, lack of budget funds and in some quarters, satisfaction if Israel is attacked.

Many Palestinians sympathize with Iran and say they would be pleased if Iran develops atomic weapons, noting that Israel is believed to possess a nuclear arsenal of its own.

"Why does Israel only have the right to possess nuclear weapons?" said Ahmed Muhsin, a 22-year-old university student in Ramallah. "Iran has the right too, and I think Iran will be the country to defeat Israel one day and kick it out of our land."

Sympathy alone won't provide protection. In 1991, some Palestinians cheered from their rooftops as Saddam Hussein's missiles flew overhead toward Israel during the first Gulf War. But some of the rudimentary Scud missiles went wayward and landed in the West Bank as well.

"The Palestinians are not part of the war, therefore they are not expecting any attacks on them," said Hani Masri, a writer for the Al-Ayyam daily newspaper. "But it could happen by mistake and some missiles could fall into West Bank, therefore the Palestinian leadership should take some measures particularly in the areas close to the border with Israel."

Palestinian officials said they have taken no special measures and said they would not ask Israel for help either. At a recent high-level meeting to discuss strategic issues, the Iranian threat wasn't even mentioned. Israeli officials said they have had no contact with the Palestinians about civil defense in case of Iran.

"We don't have the Iron Dome (rocket defense) like Israel, and we don't have shelters and gas masks. If anything happens we will be the victims. But at the same time, we have the will to help our people," said Adnan Damiri, spokesman for the Palestinian security forces.

Some critics have even developed a macabre fatalism. "It's better if we and the Israelis die together rather than live under their occupation," said Maher Ali, a 42-year-old vendor in Ramallah.

Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war. While it has relinquished some control to the Palestinian Authority, Israel retains ultimate say in the West Bank. Israel remains the final arbiter for Palestinians there who often can't travel, trade or even build homes without Israeli permission.

In the Gaza Strip, ruled by Iranian-backed Hamas militants, the situation is trickier. Loyalties there are strongly aligned with Iran, but it remains unclear if and how militants will intervene and risk being dragged into another confrontation with Israel.

Hamas has said it will not get involved in fighting between Israel and Iran unless the Palestinians are attacked. Islamic Jihad, a smaller, Iranian-backed militant group has not said what it will do.

Nafez Azzam, a top leader in Islamic Jihad, said an Israeli strike on Iran "will be a crazy adventure that would ignite the whole region."
